Interview Uta Altmüllert

Joy is a conscious decision

Executive coach: Start the day right – interview with Uta Altmüller

Did you jump out of bed full of energy this morning? If not, then you can now get some inspiration from executive coach and meditation teacher Uta Altmüller. At the age of 18, she took her competitive sports performance to the next level through daily meditation practice, and she reveals how you can programme yourself for success in the morning. Uta Altmüller has been helping people on their path to greater clarity, success and fulfilment for 30 years. Her MAGIC course is designed to help you align your inner compass with the goals that truly make you happy.

Why does work become more effective and deliver better results when you have enough rest and can switch off properly?

Success is based on our actions. Our actions, in turn, are based on our thoughts. When our thoughts are clear and powerful and we are well connected to ourselves, our actions are also powerful and successful – and our lives feel fulfilled and happy.

Powerful, clear thoughts come from our source, deep within ourselves. In order to connect to this source, we need time to rest and regenerate in addition to our daily activities. It is relatively easy to tell whether you have enough rest in your everyday life. Ask yourself, ‘Do I feel joy when the sun shines on my face, my children laugh or I hear the birds chirping?’ Joy is an important indicator of whether you are in your power.

Everywhere in nature, we find the rhythm of rest and activity. This is a very important principle of life. We would do well to look to nature, as its laws have proven themselves over thousands of years. It's a bit like breathing: if we don't have any breaks between our appointments, any space ‘in between’, then our energy will eventually decline rapidly. If you notice that your energy is waning, don't be afraid to seek advice and support, for example from coaches.

What do you recommend for a good start to the day?

The most important thing is the way we get up. Are you looking forward to your day? Make a conscious effort to be positive and in a good mood! Joy is not the result of external factors – it is a conscious decision. Take your time getting up, don't leave your bed until you have a smile on your face. You can do this, for example, by cultivating gratitude for the simple things and taking nothing for granted.

Are you grateful that you have a warm bed? A job? That you can earn a living? If you work from home, can you see and appreciate the advantages of your current situation?

Those first few minutes after waking up are very crucial, and your brain stores the things it encounters during this transition from sleep to wakefulness. You can also extend your gratitude routine to include what you would like to experience or attract into your life today. With the inner attitude that it has already happened. A good standard phrase for every morning is, for example, ‘Thank you for all the good news that will come into my life today!’ Or whatever is important and beautiful to you. Then drink a large glass of warm water, treat yourself to some moderate exercise, and maybe even find time for meditation.

How do you set yourself up for success?

Life is NOW. That is a very important principle for me. What do I mean by that?

Take a deep breath in and out. What you feel right now, who is with you in your life right now, what surrounds you right now – that is your life. It's about creating the moment, knowing what I really want from my life – then I can focus and go in my direction.

In my experience, very few people know what they really want. And if they do, it's often a ‘yes, later’ or ‘when I have time’ or ‘when the children are grown up’. Don't let your life pass by aimlessly and without a plan, because then you become a pawn in other people's goals. Life happens every day, and the crucial question is: are you living your life or is your life living you?

This is an important foundation for success: I need a goal, an idea of where I want to go – only then can I follow my path and eventually know whether I am successful by arriving or reaching important milestones.

It is important that you are convinced that you will actually achieve your goal. Think, act and speak in such a way that all your energy flows in one direction and supports you in getting one step closer to your goal every day.

This is where one of the most important and powerful laws of nature that we as humans on this planet are subject to comes into play: the law of resonance. What you expect, you attract. That's why your brain needs a positive idea of what this goal looks like and how it feels to have already achieved it.

How do I align myself positively in life?

Start with the small recommendations in this interview. When you see the good in everything and maintain your good mood, you spread positivity. This in turn comes back to you and helps you to keep your life energy at a high level.
