Cleverly integrated: Home office workplace in the bedroom
What do you do if you work from home more often and only the bedroom offers you the peace and privacy to do so?
With a well-planned design, you can set up the home office in the study in such a way that you can focus on your work during the day and switch off well in the evening.
Organising your space
Keep work and sleep as separate as possible so that you aren’t reminded of your job all evening. A curtain or shelf used as a partition achieves this perfectly. Plants or skilful use of colour for zoning can be a big help here.
A view of nature
It’s a proven fact that enjoying a view does you good and improves productivity. A vista of green is a calming influence – even for your eyes, as it’s a chance for them to relax. If the room layout rules this out, then surround yourself with plants. They also have a positive effect on your wellbeing and mental health.
Utilising storage
Storing your working materials properly after you’ve finished is essential for a calm, uncluttered space. Depending on whether you need paperwork and plans for your job, or whether a small laptop is enough – you can quickly put away your work things into a pedestal on castors, shelf unit or bureau so they’re out of sight. Completed tasks can go in an archive box or a decorative folder. Make sure you set aside time regularly to tidy up and clear out.
Improving indoor air quality
Good air quality is particularly important in the bedroom. So keep a look out for certificates like the Blue Angel eco label or the Indoor Advantage Gold Seal and use electrical appliances that don’t smell too strongly (which can be caused by the flame retardants used). Printers should ideally be located in a completely different room. Important: ventilate well before you go to bed.
Preventing electrosmog
Although they can’t be seen, electromagnetic fields can disrupt your sleep. So it’s a good idea not to have a phone in your bedroom (especially if it’s cordless), and to turn off the router. Alternatively you could disable the wireless connection or decrease the signal strength.
Window privacy
If you work near a large window, you will benefit from light and an open aspect. However, if neighbours are close by there can sometimes be a need to create a visual barrier for more privacy. Other than curtains, plants can be useful if you have full-height windows. You could also use accessories, books or a fabric-spanned frame in the window as a privacy screen.
Do you know this lighting hack? A lamp on the windowsill shines a beam of light onto the sill, diverting the focus away from the room.
Less is more
The bedroom offers – and needs – a quiet environment. If you’re already dividing the room into two themed areas, you’re doing yourself a huge favour by cutting back on further functional areas and items of furniture. That jam-packed bookcase? Maybe there’s space for it in the hall! Piles of clothes? You must be able to find space for them in a corner of the cupboard.
